Moon Juk: Yummy & Nourishing Food For Periods

I recently took a course through Steamy Chick  with the lovely acupuncturist/herbalist that works with the company. She had all sorts of wisdom to share in terms of how women can take care of themselves, particularly during their ‘moon time’ (when they’re menstruating). One of my favorite practices offered in the course was making and consuming ‘Moon Juk.’ It’s super easy to make, tastes amazing, is and extremely nourishing for a women to consume during their period.

When women are menstruating, the body is working hard to pump blood in to the uterus to clear out the endometrial tissue and women are also losing a lot of blood in the process. This means that during the period it is especially important to nourish ourselves appropriately.

So without further ado, here is the recipe:

This recipe makes 4 servings, and is to be consumed the first 4 days of your period for breakfast.

Ingredients: In the ( ) are the Chinese herbal name

1/4 cup Adzuki beans (Chi Xiao Dou)

1/4 cup Job’s tears (Yi Yi Ren)

1/4 cup Jasmine white rice

1/4 cup Sweet rice

1/4 cup Longon berries (Long Yan Rou)

  • Soak first 4 ingredients overnight
  • Rinse until water turns clear
  • Add all 5 ingredients to crock pot with 7 cups of water and cook on low overnight
  • Split the Juk in to 4 servings
  • Add cinnamon and honey to taste
  • Enjoy!

While the recipe is very easy to make, some of the ingredients aren’t that easy to come by (i.e. you have to order them online and have them shipped) Because of this, I decided to make up packages of this recipe that I will have available for purchase in my office. Feel free to contact me if you’re interested in acquiring one of these perfect little period packages.
